- In 2 days, 10 lives were radically changed through the gift of living donor organ donation.
- Surgeons at The Ohio State University set a new record by performing a synchronized chain of 20 procedures,
- culminating in 10 people having new-to-them kidneys.
- While many people live in the final stages of kidney failure on dialysis,
- a type of treatment that helps the body remove excess fluid and waste products from the blood when their kidneys are not able to.
- The regime can be grueling.
- There are 104,840 people on the transplant waitlist.
- According to the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network,
- 90,506 need a kidney.
- Because of this transplant chain, 10 people were removed from that list,
- hopefully shortening the waiting time for others.
- The transplant chain took months of planning and hundreds of hours of labor from the medical teams.
- Ohio State's surgical director of kidney transplantation says "This is thanks to our donors, our heroes."
