- A museum has taken on the task of assembling a historic puzzle of sorts.
- The New York State Museum in Albany has 600 pieces of a revolutionary war boat.
- It was reportedly found at the World Trade Center site in Manhattan 15 years ago after sitting in a landfill for centuries.
- Not only are workers trying to piece the physical boat back together, they're also trying to piece together its origins.
- Our hypothesis is that it was built as a small gunboat.
- There were 13 of them that were actually built in the summer of 1775...
- in order to protect the Delaware River, Delaware Bay, and ultimately Philadelphia from incursions by the British.
- Great care was taken with the pieces of the boat before it could be reassembled.
- The museum says each of the 600 pieces was preserved in a special fluid for years.
- Then the pieces were freeze-dried to remove any moisture.
- Now that they can finally get to work, these historians are looking forward to unlocking the boat's secrets.
