- Justin Trudeau, the prime minister of Canada, has resigned.
- So last night over dinner,
- I told my kids about the decision that I'm sharing with you today.
- I intend to resign as party leader, as prime minister
- after the party selects its next leader through a robust nationwide competitive process.
- The 53-year-old has been Canada's prime minister since 2015
- and leader of the Liberal Party since 2013.
- This morning, I advised the governor general that we need a new session of parliament.
- Trudeau's father, Pierre Trudeau, served as prime minister from 1968 to 1979.
- His son energized the Canadian Liberal Party when he took over more than a decade ago.
- But recent polls have shown his popularity sharply declining.
- Members of his own party have expressed their concerns publicly about his ability to lead the party into the future,
- especially with the upcoming general elections.
- This country deserves a real choice in the next election,
- and it has become clear to me that if I'm having to fight internal battles,
- I cannot be the best option in that election.
- Trudeau remains prime minister until a new party leader is chosen.
- As that search happens, Canada's parliament will be suspended until March 24th.
