Fake smiles and the computers that can spot them

  3. Can't you tell by the way I'm smiling?
  4. Well, I find it difficult to tell if someone is really smiling
  5. or if it's a fake smile.
  6. Well, that's a coincidence because this programme is all
  7. about how computers may be able to tell real smiles
  8. from fake smiles better than humans can.
  9. Before we get into that though, a question.
  10. The expressions we can make with our face are controlled by muscles.
  11. How many muscles do we have in our face?
  12. Is it a 26, b 43 or c 62?
  13. What do you think, Sam? No idea,
  14. but a lot I'd guess, so I'm going with 62.
  15. OK. Well, we'll see if you'll be smiling
  16. or crying later in the programme.
  17. Hasan Ugail is a professor of visual computing at the University of Bradford.
  18. He's been working on getting computers
  19. to be able to recognise human emotions
  20. from the expressions on our face.
  21. Here he is speaking on the BBC Inside Science radio programme.
  22. How successful does he say they have been?
  23. We've been working quite a lot on the human emotions,
  24. so the idea is how the facial muscle
  25. movement, which is reflected on the face,
  26. through obviously computer, through video frames,
  27. and try and understand how these muscle
  28. movements actually relate to facial expressions.
  29. And then from facial expressions, try
  30. and understand the emotions or to infer the emotions.
  31. And we have been quite successful in doing that.
  32. We have software that can actually
  33. look at somebody's face in real time
  34. and then identify the series of emotions that person
  35. is expressing in real time as well.
  36. So, have they been successful in getting computers to identify emotions?
  37. Yes, he says they've been quite successful.
  38. And what's interesting is that he says
  39. that the computers can do it in real time.
  40. This means that there's no delay.
  41. They don't have to stop and analyse
  42. the data or crunch the numbers.
  43. They can do it as the person is talking.
  44. The system uses video to analyse a person's expressions
  45. and can then infer the emotions.
  46. To infer something means to get an understanding
  47. of something without actually being told directly.
  48. So you look at available information and use your understanding
  49. and knowledge to work out the meaning.
  50. It's a bit like being a detective, isn't it?
  51. You look at the clues and infer what happened,
  52. even if you don't have all the details.
  53. Yes, and in this case the computer looks
  54. at how the movement of muscles in the face,
  55. or facial muscles, show different emotions.
  56. Here's Professor Ugale again.
  57. We've been working quite a lot on the human emotions,

  71. what is a real or a fake smile?
  72. The computers have to learn that first.
  73. Here's Professor Ugail again talking about how they do that.
  74. We have a dataset of real smiles
  75. and we have a dataset of fake smiles.
  76. These real smiles are indoor smiles in a lab,
  77. so you put somebody on a chair
  78. and then show some funny movies.
  79. and we expect the smiles are genuine smiles.
  80. And similarly, we ask them to pretend they're smiling,
  81. so these are what we call fake smiles.
  82. So what we do is we throw these into the machine
  83. and then the machine figures out
  84. what are the characteristics of a real smile
  85. and what are the characteristics of a fake smile.
  86. So how do they get the data that the computers
  87. use to see if your smile is fake or genuine,
  88. which is another word which means real?
  89. They induce real smiles in the lab by showing people funny films.
  90. This means that they make the smiles come naturally.
  91. They assume that the smiles while watching the funny films are genuine.
  92. And then they ask the people to pretend
  93. to smile and the computer programme now
  94. has a database of real and fake smiles
  95. and is able to figure out which is which.
  96. Figure out means to calculate and come to an answer.
  97. Yes, and apparently the system gets
  98. it right 90% of the time,
  99. which is much higher than we humans can.
  100. Right, well, before we remind ourselves of our vocabulary,
  101. let's get the answer to the question.
  102. How many muscles do we have in our face?
  103. Is it a 26, b 43 or c 62?
  104. Sam, are you going to be smiling?
  105. What did you say? Aha, so I thought 62.
  106. Am I smiling, Neil? Sadly, you are not.
  107. You're using different muscles for that sort of...
  108. Sad look. Actually, the answer is 42.

  110. Now our vocabulary.
  111. Yes, so facial is the adjective relating to face.
  112. Then we had infer.
  113. This verb means to understand something
  114. even when you don't have all the information
  115. and you come to this understanding
  116. based on your experience and knowledge,
  117. or in the case of a computer, the programming.
  118. And these computers work in real time,
  119. which means that there's no delay.
  120. And they can tell a fake smile from a genuine one,
  121. which means a real one, as the person is speaking.
  122. They made people smile, or as the professor said,
  123. they induced smiles by showing funny films.
  124. And the computer is able to figure out,
  125. or calculate, whether the smile is fake or genuine.
